English for Academic Writing (EAW)

English for Academic Writing is intended to introduce or improve knowledge and skills in higher education level academic writing practices. Whether a student is about to begin undergraduate or postgraduate level study, or is already engaged in a university program. • Students will recognise and realise the appropriate academic vocabulary (generic and discipline-specific). • Students will recognise and realise the appropriate phrase, sentence, paragraph and information structure of a range of academic genres (essay, research paper, report, dissertation, thesis). • Students will know how to discriminate between description, narrative and argument, and use this knowledge to produce effective, convincing arguments. • Students will know how to write in a range of academic genres in an appropriately formal English style. • Students will know how to plan and organise their writing in accordance with the formats authorised by and expected within the academic community. • Students will become critical readers, speakers and writers.
